The business that became Southwest Land Title was founded in Bay City, TX, in 1937. The abstract plant was built in that year at the request of The Texas Oil Company, now known as Texaco Oil Company. The Texas Oil Company assisted in building the abstract plant by sending an employee to Matagorda County to oversee the task. The abstract plant dates back to Texas sovereignty in 1836.
The title company was originally owned by Elliott & Waldron Title & Guaranty Co. and it was acquired by Southwest Land Title Company of Bay City, Inc., in 1966.
Merle L. Teat was an employee of the title company from the early 1950s, and she purchased the Company in the mid-1970s with associates Russell Law and Eli Mayfield. Fred H. Law joined Southwest Land Title in 1984.
Southwest Land Title was sold to John C. Dickerson, III, Jim Frankson, B. Allen Cumbie, and Guy Tiller in 1992. In 1993, Fred H. Law acquired the interest of Guy Tiller and became the Manager of the Company. |
